Around World ALS Day (21 June), on 22–23 June, La Posada del Sol in La Roda (Albacete, Spain) will become a key meeting point for scientific debate and public awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) with the III International Congress on ALS “Manolo Barrós.”
Organized by the Reina Sofia Foundation in collaboration with CIEN (Center for Research on Neurological Diseases), part of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, this congress continues to be a key milestone in the fight against a neurodegenerative disease that still has no cure.
Internationally renowned experts, researchers, healthcare professionals, and patient and family associations will meet at this event, which aims to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences, foster research, and raise public awareness of the realities of ALS.
ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the neurons responsible for movement. Its symptoms lead to progressive paralysis of most muscles, and life expectancy in the vast majority of cases is less than five years. In Spain, it is estimated that between 4,000 and 4,500 people currently live with the disease.
The congress is part of the “Manolo Barrós” project, an initiative of the Reina Sofia Foundation dedicated to the search for diagnostic biomarkers for ALS in extracellular vesicles. Funded by the reina Sofia Foundation, the project is carried out through CIEN, in collaboration with the German universities of Bonn and Cologne.
