Madrid, May 5, 2025. This morning, the Fundación CIEN (Center for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases) and Sabadell Seguros formalized a collaboration agreement worth €60,000, which will enable the hiring of the necessary staff to launch the new Neurophysiology Laboratory. The technological setup of this space will be funded by the Reina Sofía Foundation, as part of its strong commitment to research on neurodegenerative diseases.
The future Neurophysiology Laboratory is built on three fundamental pillars: immediate access to patients with dementia, allowing for repeated interventions and close monitoring; the multidisciplinary nature of the Center, which integrates advanced neuroimaging technologies, biomarkers, and specialized clinical teams for comprehensive treatment evaluation; and a well-established institutional collaboration network, which fosters synergies with residential centers and organizations involved in dementia care.
The new Neurophysiology Laboratory will enable advanced neurophysiological studies and the exploration of the impact of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in patients with dementia. This non-invasive technique uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific brain regions and has become a promising tool for both research and the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
Thanks to the financial support of Sabadell Seguros, it will be possible to fund the incorporation of highly qualified research personnel, positioning the lab as a reference center in the field of dementia. Beyond facilitating scientific exploration, the lab will also enable the implementation of therapeutic interventions within the framework of rigorous clinical trials, reinforcing CIEN’s commitment to patient-centered translational research.
This initiative is part of the sustainability strategy of the insurance companies BanSabadell Seguros Generales, Vida, and Pensiones. Their project “A Purpose-Driven Insurance” promotes the transition to a more sustainable economy by linking each product to social and environmental causes. This program has already donated over €400,000 in recent years to organizations such as the Spanish Association Against Cancer, Institut Guttmann, Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, and Fundación Contigo, among others. Specifically, this initiative supports the cause of health and quality of life, linked to the Life Care life insurance.
During the signing event, CIEN’s Managing Director, María Ángeles Pérez, expressed her gratitude for Sabadell Seguros’ commitment: “It is essential for private companies to engage in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases. Their support is key to advancing research that directly impacts people’s quality of life.” She also expressed optimism about the future of the partnership: “I am convinced this is only the beginning of many joint initiatives to come.”
Bernardino Gómez Aritmendi, CEO of BanSabadell Seguros Generales, Vida, and Pensiones, stated: “It is important for companies to get involved in the research and treatment of this devastating disease that affects millions of people and their families—especially now, as its prevalence rises with the aging population. Private funding can accelerate the development of new therapies and treatments, improving the quality of life for patients and caregivers. In addition, investment in research can yield major scientific breakthroughs, leading to a better understanding of the disease and potential cures. At Sabadell Seguros, our aim is to contribute to social well-being.”
CIEN’s Scientific Director, Pascual Sánchez Juan, emphasized that “excellence in transcranial magnetic stimulation research not only depends on technology but also on the skilled professionals who apply and interpret the results.” He also highlighted that the new lab will integrate advanced techniques such as neuronavigation, quantitative EEG (qEEG), and virtual reality to study and treat patients with dementia more precisely.
With this collaboration, CIEN and Sabadell Seguros strengthen their joint commitment to cutting-edge research, with the goal of improving the lives of those affected by neurodegenerative diseases.
